Summary
Cozzens covers the late 1862 campaign and battle in detail and shows that, though adjudged a tactical draw, it was highly damaging to the South--not only did it effectively lose Tennessee, it also completely rent the upper command structure of the Confederacy's major western army. Cozzens pays attention to the eccentric personalities of army commanders Bragg and Rosecrans, to the overall campaign, and to tactical fine points, and solidly bases his arguments on extensive and broad research.
Summary
Uses excerpts from the letters, diaries, and memoirs of the combatants to recreate the Tennessee battle, and assesses its influence on the outcome of the Civil War
